The Good Food 2 Plan: Brussels’ response to sustainable food issues

The Brussels region’s Good Food 2 (SGF2) strategy represents an ambitious vision to transform the Brussels food system towards greater sustainability, while integrating social, environmental and economic issues.

SGF2 follows on from the first Good Food strategy (2016-2020) and is in line with the 2019-2024 regional policy statement, which calls for this initiative to be strengthened. The result of a year-long participatory process involving around 300 stakeholders, it aims for a structural shift towards greater sustainability by 2030.

This strategy aims to re-qualify the entire food system, from production to consumption, by adopting a model that respects people and biodiversity, while encouraging the creation of quality jobs. In concrete terms, the Good Food diet promotes healthy, tasty eating, with a focus on fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and wholegrain cereals, while favoring fresh, seasonal, preferably organic and local produce, and limiting sugars, salt, high-fat foods, animal proteins and food waste.

The 4 cross-cutting principles :

  • Governance that is participatory, decompartmentalized and co-supported
  • A systematically applied principle of social inclusion, health and food sovereignty
  • The challenges of combating and adapting to climate change and protecting and enhancing biodiversity
  • A multi-faceted urban environment

The 5 strategic axes :

Axis 1: Intensify and support agro-ecological production in Brussels and the surrounding area

Priority 2: Develop “Good Food channels” to supply Brussels

Area 3: Ensure the distribution of a “Good Food” commercial offering

Axis 4: Ensure “Good Food” for all

Priority 5: Reduce food loss and waste

67 Good Food restaurants

Today, 67 restaurants are listed in the directory and have been awarded the Good Food label. They meet defined criteria, backed up by evidence and verified by an external auditor. Here are two examples of restaurants that have been awarded the label:

The Bel’O restaurant The Bel O restaurant: here you can eat sandwiches or croques, and drink fresh soups, coffees or teas – with a delicious slice of homemade pie for those with a sweet tooth, and vegetarian and vegan options on the menu. As for the vegetables, you couldn’t ask for a shorter route: they come from their two kitchen gardens!

Le Dreamkitchen restaurant Dreamkitchen: a team of volunteers roll their mobile kitchens into the large covered hall of the Abattoir, transforming it into a neighborhood kitchen. How does it work? Lunch takes the form of a buffet, and anyone with the time and inclination is invited to come and lend a hand in preparing a healthy, fresh lunch, based on market produce. From Monday to Thursday between 12 and 2pm, DREAMKITCHEN serves a delicious vegetarian or vegan lunch and soup. At DREAMKITCHEN, you can treat yourself at a low price, while reducing food waste by reusing unsold produce from Brussels’ largest market.
